I haven't written in a while, and there is much to cover! Nothing earth-shattering though, just, you know, stuff.
I started my cataloging class yesterday. It's intimidating and I'm sort of stumbling blindly through the readings and homework, so I'm a little apprehensive about that. But I think if I get the hang of it, I may enjoy it. I like that's it's difficult and technical (as long as it doesn't continue to be impossible). It was a 4 hour class, and I got tired by the end, but I wasn't bored. The readings are difficult, though, and not in the good challenging way. The library profession is really into the acronyms - there are paragraphs with so many acronyms in them as to be actually funny. I'm familiar with the big ones now (DDC, OCLC, MARC records, etc.), but it's still quite a slog to get through and absorb. (I thought it was sort of funny - the OCLC is basically a huge union catalog of materials that libraries all over the world are adding to all the time. And it started out as the Ohio College Library Center, or something like that, but as it expanded they changed to to OCLC Inc. And after a while, they decided that the OCLC ought to stand for something, so they decided it would be the Online Computer Library Center. Librarians like acronyms so much that they had to make OCLC stand for something, rather than giving it a nice, normal name, to cut down on the acronym madness. Oh well.)
Oh, and I got 2 A's and an A- for the spring semester's classes. So yay for that. :)
This past weekend, we went on a surprise trip to Maine. We stayed in Wells and went to Ogunquit, Kennebunk, and made a quick trip to Portland on Saturday. Ryan made reservations for the hotel room in March, he said, but he didn't tell me about it until the morning we left so it would be a surprise. :) It rained most of the weekend, but we had a good time anyway. We didn't get to spend much time at all on the beach because it was so cold and wet, but we had a nice big window to watch the ocean through from our room, and at high tide the water was only a few feet away. It was violent and gusty and really fun to watch. One of the other big things I like to do in that area is eat, and rain doesn't interfere with that. :) In Ogunquit, there are three things we must do, food-wise: The Egg and I for breakfast (I had coconut french toast!), The Impastable Dream for dinner, and Bread and Roses bakery for the best pastries and other cool desserty things ever. Oh, and we also went to the candy store. :) We didn't spend much time in Portland, but we wandered through the public market and went to a used bookstore. (in it, I found the 1970-something edition of "Our Bodies, Ourselves" - the one Nellie's mom had that we used to look at. :) It was so fun to look though - because I remembered reading it when I was young and curious, and also because some things, like the birth control section, were so outdated. There were drawings of old IUDs in weird shapes, including the infamous Daikon Shield. Oooh! I should have bought it just for fun, but I didn't.)
Other things of very little consequence:
- My bottles of Miskatonic University and Mi-Go Brain Canister came from BPAL (along with a squishy brain that you can throw at walls!). Miskatonic U is perfect, and smells just like Irish coffee, with just a touch of dusty books. Mi-Go Brain Canister smells like tropical fruit and flowers - just what you'd expect! ;) Beth is going to make me poor, but this stuff is so *good*.
-We watched "Kiki's Delivery Service" and "Coffee and Cigarettes" this weekend. Both very good. "Coffee and Cigarettes" is a series of little stories told over coffee and cigarettes, and features Iggy Pop with Tom Waits (!), the White Stripes discussing Jack's Telsa Coil, and Gza and Rza (?) of the Wu-Tang Clan talking about caffiene and delirium with Bill Murray. It was pure genius, and you should see it. :)
-We got a faux-Tempurpedic mattress pad last week, and oh-my-god squishy bed! Squishy squishy squishy! My back already loves it. I know you don't care about my mattress pad, but I certainly do. :)
Now, it is time for lunch, followed by more OCLC searching exercises. And if you don't hear from me in the next few weeks during this class, don't be surprised, though I hope it doesn't come to that and I will probably use LJ as a means for procrastination. (We have 120 pages of dense cataloging material to read over Memorial Day weekend. Hooray.) Wish me luck!

Date: 2005-05-25 04:29 pm (UTC)It's a mattress pad, like 3 inches thick, and goes over our regular ol' mattress. I don't know what brand it was, but it wasn't actually Tempurpedic, just similar material (squishy foam stuff). We got it on Overstock.com for like $80 or something. And it is so cool! It supports my back in all the right places, and is soft and squishy without being uncomfortable (I find most "soft" mattresses too soft, because they let you sort of sink in.)
The only bad thing is that it's kind of stinky when it comes - it smells like, well, new foam. Kinda plasticky. Since new mattresses are really bad for you when they are offgassing like that, we put it in the bedroom, opened the windows, and closed the door. We did that every day for a few days, and it's better now. So far, that's my only complaint.

Date: 2005-05-25 04:25 pm (UTC)I'm glad your face is less swollen. Though I kind of wish I could have seen you with chipmunk cheeks. ;) I'm sending healing vibes and such your way, in hopes that you might chew normally again soon.
Oh - when you get a chance, can you email me directions to where you are? I mean like, once we get close to Ithaca, we looked up the rest of the route. And...I will see you soon! :-D
