It's a mattress pad, like 3 inches thick, and goes over our regular ol' mattress. I don't know what brand it was, but it wasn't actually Tempurpedic, just similar material (squishy foam stuff). We got it on Overstock.com for like $80 or something. And it is so cool! It supports my back in all the right places, and is soft and squishy without being uncomfortable (I find most "soft" mattresses too soft, because they let you sort of sink in.)
The only bad thing is that it's kind of stinky when it comes - it smells like, well, new foam. Kinda plasticky. Since new mattresses are really bad for you when they are offgassing like that, we put it in the bedroom, opened the windows, and closed the door. We did that every day for a few days, and it's better now. So far, that's my only complaint.
