Ok, we've been watching New Girl and have almost caught up. This means I need a new half hour comedy. What do you all recommend? I love Parks and Rec pretty much entirely, I loved 30 Rock despite Pete and uneven quality, I loved Arrested Development but only liked/had mixed feelings about the new season. I usually like Portlandia, though not always - sometimes I just didn't laugh. I actually really like The Mindy Project a lot. I fell in love with New Girl and laughed a lot despite the sometimes problematic elements. I used to like How I met Your Mother but I am frequently pissed off by it now because fat jokes, sexism, and general tedium (they still haven't met the damn mother!!)

I kind of like my half hour comedies to be not-too-dark, because I tend to use them as unicorn chasers. That's not an absolute rule though. My tolerance for -ist bullshit varies, mostly depending on degree, how it's presented, and what the surrounding redeeming qualities are.

And now that you have a sense of the alarming amount of television I am familiar with, please recommend things to me!

Have you already watched How I Met Your Mother?

Yeah, I have seen it. I used to really like it! I like things about it, and I like the actors involved, but I've been irritated by it in the past few seasons - I don't know if it's me becoming less tolerant of the sexism and fat jokes, or that there's more of that than there used to be. :/

Oh, I forgot to mention Modern Family! I like Modern Family. But I have also seen Modern Family. :)

That's all I got, lol. It's the only comedy I watch. A friend tried to get me hooked on New Girl but I only saw one episode. Otherwise I watch dramas: Game of Thrones and Call the Midwife. ;)

Good thought! We watched Scrubs as it aired, though, back in the day. ;)

I really loved Ben & Kate when it was on - they only ended showing about half a season worth, but they're very HAPPY episodes. I was really sad when Fox cancelled it.

And there's always Community of course! (I like season 1, LOVE season 2, find season 3 EXTREMELY erratic, and season 4 just kind of okay.)

Oh, how could I forget Community? I guess it's because I also found S3 and 4 erratic and just okay. But I do love Community overall. :)

Oh, and I know nothing of Ben and Kate- I'll look into it. :) Thanks!

Have you seen The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret? Or Spy?

From: [identity profile] mangofandango.livejournal.com
I have seen neither! And I think Netflix keeps recommending Todd Margaret to me, so maybe I should have been listening. I'll check them out, thanks!

Have you seen Miranda? It's my favorite comedy.

I've never seen Miranda, but I have heard other people say good things about it. I wonder if Netflix has it. Thanks!

It's really very British and a bit over the top, but I love it so ♥

I have trouble with sitcoms, but I'm attached to Night Court. It's pretty old, but it's all on DVD and available from Netflix.

Beyond that, I watch Disney Channel sitcoms because my ten year old adores them. I think they're not dreadful for sitcoms, but it's hard for me to tell. They might be worth looking at.

Sitcoms are so often terrible, I know! I fear I may have largely exhausted the American ones that I actually find funny. On to the BBC, perhaps. :)

Better Off Ted. Only two short seasons, but I rewatch bits all the time because it's so punchy. You can also look into some BBC comedy - different tempo, usually, but maybe worth a look. http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/browse even lets you filter by category of comedy! Of course, you may need to do some hoop-jumping to actually watch.

We watched Better Off Ted, back when it aired possibly! Netflix has it so that's cool. And I should probably try some BBC stuff. I have a totally non-reasonable negative response to the very idea of BBC material, which I know I need to get over because that's silly. I think I was forced to watch British comedy as a child or something. Maybe burning through all the decent comedy America has to offer will inspire me to try again. ;)

If you're in the market for BBC, I really liked Call the Midwife, though it's not a half-hour comedy, more of an hourlong comedy/drama. Also Black Books, IT Crowd, Green Wing (BIZARRE) and Hyperdrive.

Another vote for Raising Hope, that's probably my favorite right now. You also didn't mention What About Earl which is another favorite. Both of those are similar to Arrested Development as far as style and randomness.

It's not a comedy and not a half hour, but have you watched the new Netflix series called Orange is the New Black? It's by the creator of Weeds and has the same feel, if you've seen that. I burned through the whole season in two or three days. It was great!

Someone else mentioned Call the Midwife. Again, not the comedy you're looking for, but really good.

Also, have you watch the United States of Tara? The whole series is on Netflix, and they are half hour episodes. It's on the darker side sometimes, but so so good. Toni Collette plays a woman with multiple personalities, and she is an amazing actress.

So basically, I don't watch a lot of comedies, but those are my recommendations for stuff to watch :) Hopefully it was a little helpful.
