I do not work in a Bible repository.

A YA novel by Maureen Johnson was banned from a school library recently, and she wrote a blog post about it.
My personal favorite part? The woman who objected to the book said she recommended the book be replaced with a Bible, or some other "morally + ethically sound material." Maureen Johnson says:
"I think there should be Bibles in libraries, for sure. But I think there should be other books too, you know, for variety. That’s what makes it a library, as opposed to a Bible repository...
But this single person is trying to get it removed simply because it talks about homosexuality. Forget the sex thing. There isn’t any.I happen to find homophobia shocking and appalling. I think it is morally corrupt. I would like to see it removed. Where is my form?
...I think that book banning is like mold. You have to stop it before it takes over and contaminates everything."
Read the post for more on this, the book in question, and more info on the blooming onion than you ever thought you'd need.

Date: 2007-04-29 05:12 pm (UTC)I listened to an interview on NPR with Kurt Vonnegut, whose books have been banned all over the place. He pointed out that most people who are into book banning have never read much, and haven't read the book they're protesting. They're just idiots with good intentions; the most dangerous thing in the world.
It's frightening that this kind of thing even happens today.
