It is snowing today. We went out to breakfast at Lou's, and tried out our new snow tires. Now everything is quiet and pretty, and I've been in bed reading for the past hour or so. I'm reading the new Neil Gaiman, "Fragile Things", which I am savoring because it is perfect, and "Rent Girl" by Michelle Tea, which was a Christmas present from Kelly and is pretty awesome.

Which brings me to other books I got for Christmas. Let's see...from Aunt Linda, "Fast Food Nation", which I have read and wanted to have handy for re-reading and referring to, since it is really interesting and gross and awesome. Aunt Linda also gave me "The Princess Bride", which I've never read even though I've seen the movie tons of times. Also, "Those Left Behind", the Firefly/Serenity graphic novel that fills in the time between series and movie. From Ryan, I got "Fray", by Joss Whedon - a graphic novel about a slayer in the future, which I've read in the past but need to re-read. Also, "Perfume: The Story of a Murder", which I know nothing about other than it is supposed to be very good and I was compelled to read it (and they are making a movie of it, which of course they "*would* - it's a gruesome serial killer story!) I bet there are actually more that I am not thinking of right now. I have lots of reading to do - especially since I also have books for school to read (the 7th grade book club book, its sequel, and a few others). And I just spent a small Amazon gift certificate too, so new books will be coming soon. I am a reading machine, and it is awesome. :)

I got two new blank books to write in for Christmas too. One is from Janice, who just got back from traveling in southeast Asia and brought this book back for me. Another is from my mom, and it is handmade by Mayans with recycled paper molded into a raised face shape on the cover. I'm looking forward to using these books, but I haven't quite decided how. Do I just journal in them? Do I do something special and thematic? Suggestions? I'm still mulling it over.

not sure what you should use yours for, but i will tell you what i use some of mine for.. maybe you will get an idea?

+sketchbook.
+writing down random important things, not necessarily journaling though. (recipe substitutions, good quotes, etc.)
+lists. omg. lists of books to read, movies to see, places to travel..
+ideas for things. like for photographs, or other things to create, like icons :)
+collecting cool things that you cut out of magazines, or stickers you like, and taping them in. (mine is things i want for my wedding..that i cut out of magazines)

Oooh, fun ideas! I like them all. That's the thing, I'm kind of schizophrenic when it comes to this sort of thing. :) I like the idea of using the SE Asia book for lists of travel ideas, inspiring things, and stuff like that. And the one with the face...it keeps telling me it should be themed on the word "speak", but I haven't figured out how yet.

perhaps things that you're afraid to say? i have a lot of things i want to say out loud, but i don't think i'm quite there yet. i haven't been writing as much either, so..

another idea is to have a book that you mail/pass back and forth between two people. i had one of those for a while. we taped in crossword puzzles to help each other with, and things like that.

I've read Perfume before. It's an excellent novel and very unusual. I'm surprised that they are making the movie. I don't know how well it will translate.

I used to always have a blank book that I used to write down any quotes that struck me for whatever reason. I filled two or three of them that way. It's a habit I think i should get back into.

I've gotten out of the habit of blank books in general, but I love them and want to get back into them. I love the ones I had when I was teenager, even if they are filled with embarassing things and bad poetry and melodrama. They're really fun to look through, and they meant a lot to me while I was making them. So. Blank books are good, and I'm glad people have given them to me so I can start thinking that way again.

From what it sounds like, "Perfume" could be ruined in a film by being made into a stereotypical, Hannibal Lector-esque thing...or it could be cool. I'm glad I'm reading the book first, either way. :)

Fray is fantastic. I am so very excited about the Buffy season 8 comic as well.
