An unusual migraine cure
Feb. 23rd, 2010 12:18 pmYesterday I woke up with a migraine. This has been happening to me again lately, it's a lack-of-sleep and muscle strain issue. Anyway, Sophie had a pediatrician appointment to get a couple of vaccinations at 9:45, so I took her. While we sat in the waiting room, I was feeling really terrible. The pain was pretty bad, and I felt really nauseated...basically, I was convinced I'd be done for the day as soon as I got home.
Sophie had two shots. The first one, she reacted to like she has reacted to most of her shots - a little surprised sad face, a single fuss, and then back to nursing. (We tend to nurse during shots, it works really well.) The second one must have been really painful, because she did that thing that kids do where they look shocked and have to take a moment to collect themselves for the really, really, REALLY big cry that they are about to do, and then she SCREAMED AND SCREAMED. After a minute, she collected herself and nursed a little, then screamed a little more. We took a few minutes to collect ourselves and she was quiet and relaxed on the way home - exhausted is more accurate, I suppose, because that appointment caused her to miss a morning nap. As soon as we got home, I put her to bed and she slept for an hour and a half - that's long for her!
Somewhere during all this, I realized I didn't have a migraine anymore. I drove home with no problem, I put her to bed with no problem, and I ate lunch without feeling sick. I even felt okay carrying her out to the car, so the migraine basically got better as soon as she had her shots. I honestly think it was a hormonal thing - like, my body said OH NO THE BABY IS IN PAIN, STOP THIS MIGRAINE RIGHT NOW WE MUST CARE FOR HER. Like on some primal level my body reacted as though she was actually injured and went into emergency mode. (I don't feel worried about her when she reacts that way to pain, obviously, but it certainly does illicit a response!)
I can't say I recommend it as a migraine cure, but it was effective. I had a few stabby pains in the migraine area throughout the day, but in general I was fine and the whole thing was just stopped in its tracks. Weird, huh?
