mangofandango | The issue of Sawyer (of "Lost") and Spike (of BtVS and Angel) (Reply)

So, there are various discussions on LJ today about how Sawyer on "Lost" is very similar to Spike. Here's one post, which I got from the [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] community, that draws the comparison:

I commented on this in [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]'s journal, but I'm reposting it here because, what the heck? And I'm also wondering if I'm the only person in the country who does not love Sawyer.

I see the similarities, which is what makes this kind of odd. Because I really, really don't like Sawyer at all, but I love me some Spike. There's a few reasons I can think of.

Spike has the ability to completely break my heart, because underneath the tough-guy exterior he is very much a puppy dog. It's easy to see when he's hurting. There's a sensitivity to him that he lets Buffy see sometimes, a tenderness that was obviously present with Dru, and most importantly, a goodness that shines through. (He even hangs out with Buffy's mom and drinks hot chocolate! I mean, come ON! :)) The badness in him is very deliciously bad, but that's partially because he's so obviously good underneath it (by the time we get to know him later in the series, that is).

With Sawyer, I can see that there's pain causing his "badness", it's an insecurity thing, something like that. But I don't see his sweet side like I always did with Spike. I don't know that he's ultimately good on the same level that I did with Spike. And I have always gotten the feeling that thinking Sawyer is hot is like a...requirement. Like we're all expected to faint over him. That sounds silly, but he really does feel forced upon me somehow. I don't know. Maybe I'll feel differently about him with time, but it's not looking good. Just because he's of the possibly remotely redeemable bad boy archetype, doesn't mean I'm going to equate him with my Spike. Plus, Spike/James Marsters is just completely 100% hotter, hands down. ;)

So, who else loves Spike and dislikes Sawyer? I can't be the only person! Come on!
