Jan. 14th, 2004 02:29 pmSo, I found out I could get into one library science, graduate-level class to take this semester and apply to my degree if I get accepted to the program next year. I chose Reference and Information Services as that class, because it's one of the core classes everyone has to take, and because I anticipated it being one of the Most Boring Classes in the program. I figured, if I experience one of the tougher classes I have to take in the program and get through it still caring at all, I'll be all right.
I had my first class today.
In some ways, it was really pretty cool. I've never been in a room full of people who want to be librarians, and it was pretty funny to hear people casually discussing library-ish things before the professor got there. Plus, since it's graduate school, people were my age or older, which is new. One of the reasons I feel somewhat out of place in my undergrad program is because most people are younger than me, usually by a few years, and they lead much younger lives. But grad students are like me! And they are actually students because they want to learn something and they are interested in the program, which is also a nice change of pace. So that part was fun.
The professor actually reminded me a lot of Professor Frink on the Simpsons. Yes, he talks like that. Exactly like that, except with more nervous laughter. I was annoyed with his penchant for making us introduce ourselves - three times - and his roundabout way of talking about things. But it was the first day, so maybe I'll feel differently when we actually do something. I do, however, expect this class is going to live up to my expectations. It will bring Serious Boredom. There is also a ton o' reading, and I don't have the books yet.
But I think it feels good to get started anyway, and to be around library people! Yeah. I hand in my application to the program tomorrow. Eep!
