There is a GLBTQQI conference going on at URI this weekend. David Cicilline (the openly-gay mayor of Providence) spoke last night to kick it off, and I'm reading a story about it. He says:
"It's easy to demonize someone you've never met. It's harder to do that to your neighbor. Just look at Vice President Dick Cheney squirm when supporting writing discrimination into our nation's Constitution, betraying millions of Americans including his own daughter," (referring to the Bush administration's support for a Constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of a man and woman.)"
Dick Cheney's daughter is gay? I think I've heard this before, but apparently I forgot. That must make for some interesting family dynamics. The poor woman.
He also says that "[Granting marriage to same-sex couples] does not undermine marriage, it affirms it," he said. "[Also], unless you believe in stoning people...relying on Biblical passages to discriminate is just plain wrong."
Maybe he will start allowing gay marriages in Providence. That would rock my socks. :)

Date: 2004-03-26 09:34 am (UTC)this disgusts me to no end.
also i heard bush may change his vp to giuliani for the next term. can he even do that? has anyone ever done that before? and wouldn't that be horrible? .. i can't believe to the extent that he's playing off 9/11..almost like he let it happen so he could boost his campaign for iraq, reelection, etc.

Date: 2004-03-27 09:27 am (UTC)Some of the Bushies want to get rid of Cheney because he's seen as a liability. Maybe because he reminds people of Darth Vader. People like Rudy because of 9/11 and because he's very moderate on most social issues. Unfortunately the VP only has as much power as the prez wants.

Date: 2004-03-27 09:24 am (UTC)I'd say being Cheney's daughter, the poor woman, even if she weren't a lesbian. Imagine being Darth Vader's daughter. :-)

Date: 2004-03-29 12:13 am (UTC)it's a nice theory but history doesn't bear it out a lot. i'm thinking the salem witch trials and WWWII germany, the mccarthy-era unamerican activities trials and, gee, the post september 11 racist fallout for starters.
