While watching the video for Britney Spears' new song "3" (SHUT UP DON'T HATE ;)) I noticed that someone saw fit to edit the word "sin" out of it, by reversing the word like they sometimes do for, you know, actual swear words and such. In this, the official music video for a song that plays on the radio all the time, poor Britney is singing "living in nis in the new thing". Yeah. It's weird and kind of distracting. So was that a management decision, or what? Also just...why? I have never heard of this particular censoring before, and I am really honestly kind of curious (also, AMAZED. But actually curious. Standards and practices for censoring stuff like this is actually weirdly interesting to me.)
One last thought: this is a song in which Ms. Spears is proposing a threesome. I mean yeah, the words are more or less totally "innocent" unless you are a grown-up who understands meaning. But given the context, doesn't censoring the word "sin" seem a bit... odder? Should I assume parents everywhere are cool with their 8 year olds singing this song as long as they don't invoke the alternate S word? Is "sin" somehow worse when pronounced on camera versus radio? ;)
PS - Raina recently told me she had a dream in which Ryan and I got married (to each other, duh) again and we walked down the aisle to this song. Clearly, we missed out on a great opportunity there by getting married when we did. ;)
